The Greaze – Westminster School
Dating back to the 18th century, “The
Greaze” continues to be celebrated
every Shrove Tuesday. It involves the
cook tossing a pancake which has
been reinforced with horse hair over
a high bar. The aim of the game is to

grab as much of the pancake as possible
for one minute. The pupil who manages
to get the biggest bit of the pancake is
awarded the prize of a gold sovereign and
students are given a half day off school.
Rumour has it that

James Foster went to
Hurstpierpoint College and
he believes that in those
days the Head Boy was
allowed to smoke a pipe
and keep a goat.
Blundell’s School isn’t the
only school to allow unusual
pets; Strathallan School in
Perthshire allows the head
pupil to keep a goat should
they like one.
