You can do most kinds of work, but you
must not:
• Be self-employed
• Be engaged in business activity
• Be employed as a professional
sportsperson including as a sports
coach
• Be employed as an entertainer
• Take a permanent full-time job
• Work as a doctor or dentist in
training, unless you are on the
foundation programme.
For the purposes of work, UKVI define a
week as “a period of 7 days starting on
a Monday and ending on a Sunday”.
Please be aware that working more
than 20 hours per week when you are
not permitted to do so is considered a
serious immigration offence. Students
found to be in breach of their Tier 4
visa conditions risk not being able to
complete their studies.
The university has a duty to report any
students found to be exceeding their
weekly limit. The Home Office could
then curtail your visa which would have
Visa and Immigration Student Journey
serious implications on the completion
of your studies and any subsequent visa
application.
It is your responsibility as a student to
ensure that you adhere to the working
conditions permitted on your visa, as
well as all other conditions of your UK
visa. If you would like to clarify your
working allowance or have any other
visa and immigration related questions,
please contact the VISA Team.
The university has the following
responsibilities as a Tier 4 Sponsor:
• To only issue a Confirmation of
Acceptance for Studies (CAS) for visa
purposes where
• It is satisfied that the student both
intends and is able to follow the
intended programme
• It believes the student will meet
the requirements of Tier 4 and is
likely to comply with immigration
conditions
• To keep copies of students’ passports,
immigration status documents, visas
or Biometric Residence Permits
• To keep an up to date record of
students’ contact details
• To hold a copy of a student’s
Academic Technology Approval
Scheme (ATAS) clearance certificate
where required by the student’s
programme of study or research
• To check that students have
registered as required and to report
those students who fail to register on
time to UKVI
• To monitor each student’s attendance
and to report any discontinuation of
studies or unauthorised absence to
UKVI
• To report deferrals, suspensions, time
out from studies of more than 60
days, withdrawals and terminations of
study to UKVI
• To notify UKVI of any significant
changes in your circumstances
• To notify UKVI of any information
which suggests a sponsored student
is breaching the conditions of his/her
immigration permission.
