Section 2: Short-Term Study Visa (STSV)
A Short-Term Study Visa allows
someone to come to the UK to study
for up to 6 months (or 11 months for
English language courses). The shortterm
study visa will be issued as a
vignette, (sticker) in your passport
to cover the total length of your
permission to stay in the UK, with
multiple entries allowed. This visa does
not allow any work or work placement
and you will be unable to extend your
stay in the UK.
At Glasgow Caledonian University
you may be eligible for the Short-Term
Study Visa if:
• You need to attend the university for
your studies, and
• You need immigration permission to
enter the UK, and
• Your studies are not appropriate for
the university to issue CAS under
Tier 4. Registry (Student Records)
will issue a Short-Term Study Visa
letter instead for the purposes of
making your Short-Term Study Visa
application and for entry to the UK.
You may need a Short-Term Study Visa
if you are:
• A part-time or distance learning
student who needs to attend the
university for a short period/s of less
than 6 months for tuition and/or
assessment, or
• A student, who is undertaking
assessments without tuition, e.g.
taught students taking reassessment
without attendance; research
students required to return to take
a Viva Voce examination and final
thesis submission, or
• A visiting student taking part in an
exchange or partnership scheme who
only needs to attend the university for
less than 6 months at any given time.
What are the requirements to apply
for a Short-Term Study Visa?
In order to get immigration permission
for short-term study you need to
demonstrate:
• You are 18 years old or over
• You are genuinely seeking entry to
the UK for a period not exceeding
6 months (or 11 months for English
language studies)
• You have been accepted on a course
of study provided by Glasgow
Caledonian University (this includes
those conducting a period of research
studies as part of an overseas degree)
• You intend to leave the UK at the end
of the period stated by you in your
visa application (this must be less
than 6 months)
• You can demonstrate you meet
the costs of your living expenses,
accommodation and return or onward
journey from the UK
• You do not intend to work during this
period in the UK.
If you are travelling to the UK to only
attend your graduation ceremony
you should apply for immigration
permission as a Standard Visitor (the
same category used by tourists) as you
will not be studying.
