Leanne Wilson from GCU’s Centre for Economic Justice speaking at Talk Exchange.
TALK EXCHANGE
WITH GOVANHILL SWAP MARKET
WHAT:Swap Market is a community led initiative. It is
a feminist exchange space for sharing resources, ideas,
knowledge and cultures without the need for money.
Swap Market puts into practice alternative economic
approaches which have relevance for people living in the area
who face signifcant poverty. Their model of exchange for goods
is based on a points system instead of money. This means
that people facing signifcant disadvantage can exchange and
recycle material goods and skills. Using the model of CPE’s Food
for Thought in the North of Glasgow and the non monetary
exchange model of Swap Market, Talk Exchange was developed:a skill sharing concept with researchers and community with
a themed programme of workshops.
WHERE & WHEN: All sessions took place at the Swap Market
in Govanhill in the south of Glasgow:
•Sat 26th October 2019 - Feminist Economics with Artist
and activist Ailie Rutherford talking about the People’s Bank
of Govanhill and Leanne Wilson, GCU Centre for Economic
Justice PhD student.
•Sat 2nd November 2019 - Intersectional Feminism with Dr
Natalia Farmer, GCU Social Work.
•Sat 9th November 2019 – Economic Resilience with
Dr Josephine Adekola, GCU Risk Management.
•Sat 16th November 2019 – Managing your Money with
Thelma Okey Adibe, GCU’s Glasgow School for Business
and Society.
WHY:Public Engagement should be a two way process
but often the power balance in terms of knowledge lies with
the researcher. How do you truly engage with community
where everyone’s knowledge, contribution, expertise and lived
experience is valued equally? Swap Market members had asked
for events around money management and understanding
fnance building on work they had already done around
feminist economics.
WHO: CPE have run a few projects in Govanhill and having
worked as a community based researcher for many years in
this diverse area of Glasgow, most recently on the Peña project
with Roma women, the link with Ailie Rutherford of The People’s
Bank of Govanhill and The Swap Market came about through
Dr Heather Lynch. CPE coordinated and led the programme
and invited GCU Researchers from Accounting and Finance,
Risk, Management, The Centre for Economic Justice and
Social Work to deliver interactive talks as part of the Talk
Exchange series.OUTPUTS: Talk Exchange ran on four consecutive Saturdays
in October and November 2019. The Swap Market was open
for usual business while the workshops were taking place even
though it is a very small space. We had an audience of 16 on
week one including 4 speakers or facilitators and 12 on each of
the following weeks including 3 4 speakers or facilitators which
was a better number for the space. We audio recorded the
sessions with consent from all attendees.
