War Game Scottish Parliament screening.
OUTCOMES:
•The event was part of the UK

to learn more about this topic with
12% neutral, 1% disagreed and the

“Enjoyed the event and learning
more on the topic and that there are
books out there to read further on
the topic.”
•This event put the topics of censorship,
war and the media in the spotlight
highlighting the value of social
sciences to our lives.
“An excellent opportunity to
explore this important issue and
associated themes.”
•It allowed a space for people who
remembered the flm coming out to
speak from diferent perspectives to
a younger generation. The panel
discussion about the flm and nuclear
weapons was fascinating and it was
recorded on flm for future reference.
“The flm itself was very gripping and
intriguing and it was great to hear the
panel’s thoughts about when it came
out and its relevance nowadays.”
•Many of the audience members were
viewing the flm for the frst time.
“My First Viewing Of This
Disturbing Film. Thank You For
This Opportunity.”
“Thank you for creating this event.
It allowed me to confront long-held
fears and fnally watch the
flm. I enjoyed the excellent and
well researched commentary from
the panel and the discussion and
questions were well motivated.”
•Event brought GCU Archives Scottish
CND collection and Scottish CNDs
exhibit ‘A Peace of History’ marking
the 60th anniversary of the
organisation to new audiences and
perhaps will lead to new members.
•Further to GCU’s The War Game:
Censorship, War and Media event as
part of the ESRC Festival of
Social Science in November 2019,
Scottish CND held a follow up
screening at The Scottish Parliament
on the afternoon of 20th February
2020. The event was hosted by Bill
Kidd MSP and members of the public
were joined by some of the young
people from GCU’s Advanced Higher
Hub who had attended the November
event. The young people came from
fve Glasgow Secondary Schools.
•One of the pupils, Sonia Ram also
joined the panel for a discussion
afterwards alongside Lynn Jamieson,
Chair of Scottish CND and GCU’s
Professor John Cook of the Glasgow
School for Business and Society whose
research again set the context for the
flm. Sonia said that
“young people were desensitised to
the impacts of a nuclear attack but
that the flm really resonated with
her as the people in the flm could be
her friends and family…Viewing the
flm had had a profound efect on her
views around nuclear weapons.”
In a touching gesture at the end of
the event, a member of Scottish CND
passed on his original copy of The War
Game book to Sonia and asked her to
treasure it as he has for over 50 years.
•Following the screening, Bill Kidd MSP
thanked GCU’s Advanced Higher Hub
and said it was
“important to bring young people
into the debate to ensure that the
potential for this doesn’t happen”.
