CASTLEMILK
STABLES TALKS
Simon Docherty, GCU Archive Centre delivering his talk on the Oscar Marzaroli collection. Sharing the social history of Castlemilk
through photographs.
WHAT: Community talks connecting the work at GCU to
people’s lives and making links.
WHERE & WHEN: 3rd and 6th March at Castlemilk Stables.
WHY: Cassiltoun Housing Association approached CPE
after hearing about the Food for Thought talks with
Queens Cross Housing Association to see if we could do
something similar together. GCU has already been working in
this area of the city for over ten years with The Caledonian Club
and GCU Enactus so it makes sense to deepen our engagement
in this community. We decided to start of, to run a few
talks within existing time slots of group activity run by the
Housing Association set up to improve health and wellbeing
in their local community.
WHO: Paddy McKenna, Community Team Coordinator and
Stuart Whittaker, Community Woodland Ofcer at Cassiltoun
HA and Susan Grant.
OUTPUTS:
•The frst talk was with Cultural Fellow, Anne Donovan
and The Caledonian Club given the history of the Club
working in Castlemilk at nearby St Bartholomew’s
Primary, Machrie Nursery and St Margaret Marys Secondary
Schools for the last 12 years. 15 members of the public
attended, mostly members of the HA’s writing group
and lunch club and also two Primary School Headteachers
from other schools in the area who are keen to work
with GCU.
•The second talk was with Simon from GCU Archives on the
Oscar Marzaroli Collection which featured an image from
Castlemilk and was a topic the HA thought would be of
interest to their photography group. 30 members of the
public attended – a mixture of HA tenants and members
of the local community and nearby areas.
OUTCOMES:
•The audience loved hearing about the Club but especially listening
to Anne Donovan’s role in helping the pupils to create their books
and her reading from one of Anne’s own novels' which the group
had been revisiting. Anne said that she would return to the HA’s
writing group.•The Castlemilk Wildlife and Photography group worked on
images in the style of Marzaroli and we showcased these images
at the event. People were also encouraged to bring along their
own social history photos and it was amazing to see all the old
photos of Castlemilk.•The local Castlemilk History group who attended are now keen
to continue talking to the GCU Archives about their collection. The family of one of the boys featured in the iconic 1963
‘Castlemilk Lads’ photo were in the audience and this added
a real local dimension to the discussion.•It was a really lively discussion and observing from the back,
you could see and hear the impact each of the images had on the
audience which conjured up so many memories. The power of
visual imagery.•The event was promoted by Lost Glasgow and was well timed
with Street Level Photoworks Oscar Marzaroli exhibition in 2020.COMMUNITY AND PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT GOAL:
