GCU STEM NETWORK
CPE coordinates the GCU Science,
Technology, Engineering and Maths
(STEM) network of 70 staf and PhD
students from SCEBE and SHLS and
central support to share opportunities,
provide Public Engagement with STEM
training, host STEM Ambassador
training and promote peer support and
cross-disciplinary working. Together we
deliver activity to promote inclusivity
and diversity in STEM and enhance the
University’s reputation in this area.
GCU STEM network hosted public
engagement with STEM training in 2019
with Glasgow Science Festival Director
and STEM Ambassador Training with
Science Connects in 2020 with GCU
staf and participants from Industry all
across the City. CPE this year printed
pop-up banners for staf to take out with
them to help promote the brand and
continued to visibly promote it on social
media #GCUSTEM
CPE provided one to one consultation
support to staf for new and existing
engagement initiatives to maximise
engagement strands in teaching and
research support of GCU’s mission as
a University for the Common Good.
Presented at School of Computing,
Engineering and Built Environment’s
research seminar series in February
2020 on embedding public
engagement within the school and
with Dr George Loumakis a proposal
for a public engagement with
science module for students.
CPE delivered presentations and
guest lectures on community and
public engagement including ofering
opportunities for students to be
involved in activity to give them
experience of community engagement
and to understand the power of
their knowledge now and in their
future careers:
•Practical session with L2 Human
Nutrition and Dietetic Students
in 2019 with a further session in
2020 to work up ideas for the GCU
Community Science Day.
•Presentation and practical exercise
with Post Doc Sport and Exercise
Students and GCU Archives.
•Guest Lecture with L2 Physiotherapy
Students ahead of their community
engaged module.
•Talk at GCU Graduate School
student induction.
•CPE sat on the GCU Student
Enactus Advisory Group to
support young people to
engage in social action and
social enterprise.
