Roles and referrals
The extent of a member of staff’s
involvement in the support of
a distressed student is dependent
on their role and also on the nature
of the student’s distress.
It is important to offer help
• That is appropriate to your role and
• For which you have the relevant
expertise and time.
Be realistic and do not offer help which is
beyond your capabilities. It is important
that both you and the student are clear
about the nature and limits of your role.
Consider other sources of support within
the university, e.g. Careers Service if the
student is having doubts about their
chosen course or the Student Advice
Centre for representation and advice.
