The walls could not take this new burden and slowly started to buckle, as many of the walls were honeycombed with numerous chambers. Remedial work was swiftly undertaken in the early 20th century in the form of huge oak bracing. (Replaced in 1984 by stainless steel bracing rods) This work undoubtedly saved the castle but resulted in the structure being sealed for safety before the outbreak of the Second World War.
