For Toddlers The outdoor classroom is just as important as the indoor classroom for under twos, especially once children are mobile. Being outside allows toddlers to have so much more freedom when it comes to exploring and being active. There is often more space in the outdoor environment, allowing toddlers to run in open spaces without having to worry about objects being in the way. Toddlers have a lot of energy that they need to burn off; being outside allows them to do this. Also at around 18 months old toddlers are often confident walkers and are ready to explore through climbing. In the outdoor classroom, there is often the space to accommodate resources such as climbing frames. Exploring the outdoors offers toddlers the ability to test climbing on objects which are appropriate and safe. The outdoors is a great place for under twos to begin to test boundaries and the idea of risk. Being outside and discovering new things pushes toddlers to challenge themselves and take that risk to find out what they are; such as splashing in puddles or exploring the mud kitchen. Being outside offers a fantastic sensory experience for toddlers, they are able to experience different types of weather like listening to the noise the wind makes in the trees and feeling the light rain on their faces. In the outdoor classroom children are able to take part in growing plants, giving them a good understanding of the world whilst also having the opportunity to observe wildlife like birds or bugs. Toddlers are often starting to become more independent with feeding and dressing themselves. Getting ready to go in to the garden offers the opportunity for toddlers to develop their independence by helping to put their coat, hats and wellington boots on. When toddlers are becoming independent, being outdoors allows them the freedom to explore and discover.
