FOOD REVIEW WEST COAST REVIEW | 21 Looking for a romantic spot to celebrate Valentine’s Day? The Kilchrenan Inn serves up warm Highland hospitality and delicious locally sourced fare. Jordan and Lesley bring a wealth of experience to this enviable country location and look forward to welcoming locals and visitors for lunch, dinner or a stopover with a wee dram by the fi re. The couple have transformed the inn, a historic 18th-century trading post, into a fi ne gastro pub, defi nitely worth the short drive from Oban to experience the food and atmosphere. ‘Everything is locally-sourced and made on the premises,’ Lesley said. ‘We use traditional British recipes to create a menu that is relaxed, simple, honest good food. We stock all Scottish beers and cider, and have an ever-growing whisky selection.’ Jordan, who has worked in some of the world’s top restaurants and is a past UK Seafood Championships regional winner, has developed a tempting seasonal menu featuring the bounty of the Highlands that will appeal to every taste. For lunch, enjoy selections such as devilled whitebait and aioli, lamb faggots and peas, with apple and blackberry crumble for dessert. Dinner features more locally-sourced favourites such as West Coast mussels and shallot broth, braised oxtail, red wine and mash, and handmade desserts such as steamed ginger sponge and butterscotch. Vegetarians will fi nd lots to love as well, with treats such as baked fennel, potato and Mull cheddar. They also feature a Sunday roast from 12.30, which changes each week. Located a 15-minute drive from Taynuilt in the heart of Kilchrenan village near scenic Loch Awe, the pub is homely, yet contemporary, and is the perfect place to celebrate a romantic dinner or just relax after exploring the area. ‘We have a wood-burning stove in the bar to warm you up after some of the lovely woodland walks in the area,’ Lesley shared. If you fancy staying over at this charming bucolic inn, you can enjoy one of their beautifully appointed rooms, perfect for a romantic getaway that’s not very far, but feels like a world away.
