WEST COAST REVIEW | 25
the support of local funders
including Lochy Hydro, Carraig
Ghael, An Suidhe, the
community council, and other
groups and individuals.
They have allowed the development
of a community
space that is used by all and
will continue to grow in whatever
direction that our supporters
decide.
Refl ection
My favourite thing about the
orchard is that it is being used
– as a tool for education, an
opportunity for volunteering,
and a space where physical
and mental health is improved.
The variety of wildlife has increased,
as has the number
of wild fl owers since the tree
canopy has been lifted. Individuals
and families use it as
destination for walks and picnics.
Groups use it for treasure
hunts, and the primary
school as an outdoor classroom.
When I have the time, there
is nothing I like more than to
spend a few quiet minutes
on the bespoke bench under
the beech trees, watching the
River Orchy fl owing under the
bridge, and hoping to see the
kingfi sher.
What’s next?
Hopefully, the next year will
see the completion of the
Portsonachan garden. In the
Dalmally Glebe, the willow spiral
will grow suffi ciently to allow
it to become a tunnel with
a quiet contemplative space at
its centre, and there are plans
to introduce a geo-caching
site within the garden.
Can I visit?
We would love readers to
come and visit the garden
and enjoy it.
Look for the church in Dalmally
and follow the Old Military
road round behind it.
The garden is on the right between
the road and the river.
If anyone would like to come
and help on our monthly volunteer
days, please get in
touch.
The orchard and woodland
garden is free to all and open
all of the time. Everyone is
welcome to come and enjoy
the space.
