What’s happening?
World Porridge Day is an
annual international event,
celebrating Scotland’s staple
breakfast, and supporting the
work of Argyll-based charity
Mary’s Meals, which provides
a daily meal (often porridge)
in school to some of the
world’s poorest children.
The Porridge Smiles campaign
is a way for everyone
to get involved.
Mary’s Meals and porridge
company Stoats are encouraging
families, schools, communities
and work places to
get together on, or around
October 10, cook up a big
pot of porridge and set out a
selection of tasty toppings –
then decorate each bowl of
porridge with a smiley face.
You can take a picture of
your porridge and share it
on social media, using the
hashtag #porridgesmiles,
and tagging @marysmeals
and @Stoats, and you
can support Mary’s Meals
by turning your porridge
party into a fundraiser, or
texting OATS18£2 to 70070

school for a month – giving

Everyone who wants to get
involved is welcome, and the
event now is marked around
the world.
Last year Dalmally Primary
School pupils were among
locals who got involved –
they raised money and
enjoyed a decorated
mid-morning bowl of
porridge at their Harvest
Assembly.
Who benefi ts?
The Porridge Smiles campaign
runs throughout October
to highlight the difference
a daily mug of porridge
makes to the lives of hungry
children and raise vital funds
for school meals.
Mary’s Meals works with
some of the world’s poorest
communities to set up
school feeding programmes
that encourage children to
attend class, learn, and work
towards a better future.
It provides nutritious daily
meals to more than 1.25
million children every school
day.
Across Africa, the meal the
children are served before
lessons begin is a vitaminenriched
maize porridge.
