Oban and Lorn Lions
Club’s press offi cer
Jim Edge looks back
on the summer’s events.
Well, that’s that then for another
year. What a brilliant
summer we have had – even
the weather played ball, with
Charities Day and the raft race
getting really good days.
Did you make it along to one
of our musical Thursday evenings
at McCaig’s Tower?
They were a treat, with Oban
High School Pipe Band and
Highland dancers entertaining
our visitors.
All these events have contributed
to the Lions raising over
£3,000 this year. Magnifi cent.
We could not have done it
without your help and support.
All of the money we raise
at local events fi nd its way
back into the community.
World Sight Day
The other project that we embarked
on early this year was
our glasses recycling scheme,
which was a huge success.
We have received hundreds of
pairs of glasses, which we are
dispatching to our Lions Sight
First teams for distribution to
wherever in the world there is
a need for our help.
Thank you.
And please keep putting your
old glasses into our collection
boxes in local opticians and
other businesses.
October 11 is Lions World
Sight Day, when we promote
all the things that Lions across
the world are doing to make
life better for people suffering
with blindness and general
sight problems.
Since 1988, this event has
raised awareness about the
importance of eye health and
the need for quality eye care
services for all. On this special
day, Lions clubs around the
world conduct sight-related
projects including: vision
screenings, eyeglass donations,
restorative surgeries,
eye health education programmes,
and the donation
of assisting devices to those
with vision impairment.
If you have been following this
column over the past year, you
will know that Lions around
the world have been celebrating
100 years of Lions clubs.
To mark the anniversary, we
were challenged to take action
on sight, hunger, health,
and humanitarian disasters.
Local Lions clubs, including
ours, took up the challenge,
and millions of people around
the world have been touched
by their work.
We are proud of how Lions
have helped to make a difference
this year, but there
is a lot more to do, and we
would love to welcome more
members to our team to do
it. If you fancy making a difference,
and helping to organise
some of Oban’s biggest
(and most fun) community
events, please get in touch:
